CLAPTON EXTEND LEAGUE LEAD WITH SOLID VICTORY

EPPING UPPER CLAPTON RFC 29 V 25 EAST LONDON RFC
The score suggests this game was closer than it actually was. It demonstrated the two sides of Clapton’s character….deadly accurate and clinical with their execution of plays at times, whilst being somewhat complacent to the extent of allowing their opponents some faint hope in games at others!
EUCRFC had secured their try scoring bonus point by half time. The weather had turned wintery, and was a major factor in determining the type of game that was played. Clapton have had a dominant scrum all season and their lineout too has guaranteed a solid stream of possession. The loose was keenly contested and the weight of ball in Clapton’s favour enabled them to have 2 touch downs on the scoreboard within the first 10 minutes. Reece Reed reacted quickly after a penalty was awarded in the home teams favour and he was followed over the line by Dale Gardiner who pounced quickly on to an interception opportunity. Dan Jones converted both tries.
East London responded and scored from a line out and then EUCRFC scored themselves from such a base. Ollie Forrest had put the club in prime position and Mitch Sinfield took advantage to cross to make it 19-5 in favour of EUCRFC. Back came East London, Clapton responded yet again and this time Lee Reed crossed from another lineout for the bonus point try. East London kicked a penalty to round off the scoring for the first period to make it 24-13 to the Upland Road outfit at half time.
The second half was a stale mate until time added on approached. Clapton had been forced into several injury adjustments, Lucas Moretta, John Robinson and James Hack adding to the solidity of the team. Play became a bit scrappy and whilst both teams had opportunities to score but failed to convert them. Literally as full time loomed, Clapton gave away an interception try which gave their opponents some faint hope only to extinguish that again with Reece Reed adding his second try for the home team. The last act of the game saw East London cross for their fourth try which ensured they picked up a couple of points from this contest. On this showing, Clapton shouldn’t rue too much this festive generosity at the end of this contest which sees them now with a 6 point advantage in the league. This week’s challenge comes from Millwall who have failed to register a victory so far this season. Complacency must not overtake them in this contest as the first half of the season’s fixture come to a completion.
