Spirited Canvey loose out to the club sparkle

CLAPTON PROVIDE THE FIREWORKS IN SPARKLING DISPLAY
EPPING UPPER CLAPTON RFC 58 V 3 CANVEY ISLAND RFC
There was always going to be a question mark as to how Clapton were going to react to the set back of the previous week, but in the end the Club firework display and entertainment from the previous evening was carried on to the pitch the following day and continued their season’s progress with a stunning sparkling display. EUCRFC ran in 10 tries, furthered their intent to develop their youngsters with George Cook and George Douglas especially prominent and personally rewarded with scores as too was TC Brabant-Rudd whom clearly is enjoying a renaissance in his rugby career! Reece Reed also capped a crackerjack home debut with a hat-trick of tries and demonstrated that he’s going to be a real live wire in weeks to come.
Clapton started like a rocket. Reed scored after 3 minutes, then proved provider for Dale Gardener soon after, both involving quick tap penalties. Canvey had started in combative mode in the forwards using their pack as their main form of attack. Clapton stood firm, ruled the line-outs and were able to repel all their forays though and with 5 minutes to go in the half George Douglas was on hand to finish a flowing move to score in the corner. With no successful conversions, that made the score 15-0 and half time came soon after.
The second period started with a couple of flashes of brilliance, Reed added a second to his account and Dan Jones snaked past many opposition players in covering the whole length of the field to add another which this time he managed to convert too. A bonus point and victory seemingly assured, EUCRFC really started to assert themselves and managed 5 more tries as the finale to their display came. Reece Reed got his third, George Douglas and Dale Gardener combined with each other on two occasions to add further tries to their respective tallies. George Cook after weeks of endeavour opened his scoring account for the season and perhaps the best of all was scored by the ‘warhorse’ TC Brabant-Rudd whom took an inside pass to finish off a move originated by Jones and Joey Mbu. Jones added a further 3 conversions. Canvey with their last sortie into the Clapton 22 in time added on, slotted over a dropped goal to ironic cheers. Their powder was dry and seemed to have fizzled out in the face of Clapton’s all round game.
Whilst it’s always good to have resounding victories and the score line has helped to consolidate Clapton’s position at the head of League 3 Essex, it was the manner and the contribution from so many that will help reassert their confidence for the next series of games in the run up to Xmas.
This week sees a break in the league programme with all eyes on England at Twickenham. EUCRFC resume with an away game at Old Cooperians the following week before 3 more games in December. With time elapsing, injuries will have healed and a wider choice will be available as more and more players enhance their credentials!
