This was top v bottom and the score-line suggests this was easy, but by no means was it a totally one sided contest. Millwall to their credit never gave up; they tried to play rugby at every opportunity and probably scored the best try of the game! However in their desire to play they sometimes made mistakes and spilt ball which Clapton were ruthless in capitalizing on. As a consequence they ran in 12 tries at regular intervals and finished the first half of the season with a 6 point advantage at the head of London 3 Essex League.
Millwall competed at line out and loose, but were second best at the scrum which has been a dominant part EUCRFC’s game so far this season. It gave Clapton a comfortable base; Jon Robinson relishing the space he was afforded in a rare back row appearance, and which both Dom Merrett and Reece Reed in the half back position were able to exploit. An early brace of tries from Ollie Stokes started a procession of scores, followed by tries for Joe Mbu, George Cook and James Hack. In between, Millwall had countered with a length of the field try to make it 33-5 at half time.
The second half started with Cook adding a second to his tally, Dale Gardiner, Reece Reed, Cam Furlong, Dom Merrett, Dan Jones and a fine solo effort from George Douglas also crossing for tries. Jones added 9 conversions in total for a personal tally of 23 points from the game.
There were some fine unselfish performances especially from younger players namely Lucas Moretta, Will Parrish and Dom Merrett. Their contributions were equally important and augur well for the remainder of the season when Clapton will want to replicate the results and performances from the first half of this year’s campaign.
