20 minutes in to this game and Clapton had scored 4 tries, secured the bonus point and were heading to the top of the league. They all know its early days and so what they really wanted to see was progress from their first outing and this performance certainly delivered that. By full time, EUCRFC had run in 8 tries in total whilst entertaining and satisfying a large home crowd. In what was a good team performance, at time certain individuals stood out with their own big contributions that certainly helped to create that team effort?
Jordan Watson on his home debut opened the scoring with a brace of tries, both requiring some real individual opportunism and skill on his behalf. Dan Jones scythed through the visitors defence to score the third in what was to be a hat-trick of scores for him; and then straight from the restart Des Griggs galloped in from 40 metres to have Clapton ahead by 24-0 and the first quarter of the game was not even complete.
Almost inevitably Ilford came back! Clapton as they continue to develop must work on their complacency and relaxing at crucial times that they allow to make themselves vulnerable after they’ve just scored. Ilford seized on this and took the initiative, used their forwards well and 10 minutes before half time they had due reward with a try from a line-out drive.
The second half started a little slower than the first but as Clapton upped their pace and game, scores started to come. The EUCRFC lineout and scrum were functioning well and out wide their backs were starting to make frequent line breaks. At the centre of this was Ollie Forrest controlling matters from scrum half. Others were putting big shifts too: Dave Allen, Lucas Morreta, and Mitch Sinfield were all featuring in the loose. It was Captain Cam Furlong that burst through in centre field to add the next score, Mitch Sinfield soon followed that with a touchdown and Dan Jones got the final two tries when he was able to finish good team moves. He added 4 conversions for a personal game tally of 23 points.
Ilford managed a consolation try just before fulltime, but it was Clapton that took the points and the plaudits. This match performance achieved many of the principles they were looking to develop. There was better cohesion and understanding amongst the players, more proficiency was gained by the young new boys and the experienced heads continue to show through their own actions the sort of leadership the team needs to continue to succeed. The next challenge comes in the shape of Campion, a team that usually features players of high technical skills.
