Clapton battle but no points

NO REFLECTION!!
SUDBURY RFC 45 V 0 EPPING UPPER CLAPTON RFC.
It’s an often used cliché that the score is not ‘a true reflection of the game’ but this really was one of those occasions. Clapton had travelled to Sudbury, well aware that they needed to come away with some points to help their survival plans for future participation in this League. They could not be faulted by the level of effort they made in trying to achieve this. The difference between the two sides really just amounted to the pace and incisiveness of the Sudbury back 3 and a second half period where the home team ran in 4 tries in a 6 minute period which added insult to injury and ultimately distorted the score-line by a considerable degree.
Clapton enjoyed long periods in this game where their game plan gave them at least parity. They knew they had to be direct, they knew that they had to keep Sudbury involved in the contact areas. They couldn’t give Sudbury space out wide where they had pace to burn! Sudbury ruled the lineouts, Clapton the scrums. The loose was keenly contested, but turnovers proved costly. 2 mistakes plus an incisive entry in to the line led to 3 Sudbury first half tries and a 19-0 deficit at half time.
For almost 30 minutes in the second period the teams traded blows, differing styles leading to a fine spectacle for the crowd. However with both teams tiring, gaps started to appear and Sudbury exploited this with amazing efficacy crossing 4 times in such a short period and putting the score way out of reach. Clapton tried to breach the Sudbury line to the very end but alas there was no reward for them.
If EUCRFC can take anything from this game, they can at least console themselves in the knowledge that they never stopped competing to the very end and the continued development of Clapton’s youth graduates goes from strength to strength. Huge performances were produced from Des Griggs and George Cook and all is not completely lost for the final game of the season. Although it remains a must win with a bonus point challenge, it remains certainly achievable especially on the back of this performance. After that, EUCRFC have to hope that other results go in their favour.
