A bright, cold Sunday morning saw Epping UCRFC U14s suffer their second defeat of the season, this time against Old Verulamians RFC U14s.
With no replacements available to rotate tiring legs, and some players playing out of position, this was always going to be a tough match for Epping. The first half was an even contest, with the sides trading tries, including a handful of moments of real individual skill, including a delightful chip and collect.
Trailing 2-3 at half-time, Epping needed a strong second half to keep Old Vs at bay. Unfortunately, the cold weather seemed to contribute to a number of knock-ons and some wayward kicking throughout the match, with Epping gifting the ball back to Old Vs too often.
Playing without possession and having to defend constantly is tiring and challenging, and it was no surprise when Old Vs took advantage as space opened up, scoring several quick tries in succession with some powerful running rugby.
However, one of the qualities of this Epping team is that they do not give up until the final whistle, and despite knowing they were not going to be successful this match, managed one last rally to narrow down the score.
Final score 25-35 to Old Verulamians. A good effort by Epping in difficult circumstances. On to the next match!
