CLAPTON PAY PENALTY FOR MISSED CHANCES

CLAPTON PAY PENALTY FOR MISSED CHANCES
EAST LONDON RFC 22 V 19 EPPING UPPER CLAPTON RFC
True the League title was secure, true there was always a possibility of complacency and true East London had more to gain than their visitors from this match. None of these were to be real factors in Clapton’s performance as they slid to only their second defeat of the season. They just failed to take advantage of the ample scoring opportunities that came their way in a very keenly contested match as the season meanders to an end. Victory for East London has helped them consolidate their runners up position, the reward should they maintain it at the end of the campaign will be a play-off match against an Eastern Counties opponent.
Like so many recent contests, EUCRFC were quick out of the blocks and a passage of play containing several phases was finished off by Dan Jones. The kick was missed and it was to be one of several failed attempts they experienced during the afternoon. This was then followed by a sin bin offence which allowed East London back in to the game. They quickly replied with a couple of tries to lead 12-5 through to half time.
The second half started and Clapton quickly responded and levelled the score with a converted try by Alfie Reynolds. East London got the next score and then followed with the crucial penalty goal which was to be the vital difference at the final score. Penalties had broken up the continuity of EUCRFC’s game and missed scoring attempts meant that even though George Cook got the Thornwood based club within 3 points in the latter stages of the game, there still remained a belief that they could go on and win the match! Sadly they just couldn’t get the vital final score.
2 home game remain for Clapton to restore winning ways and pride. They will not have enjoyed losing this contest even though it will have no bearing on the final outcome of their League campaign. Over the next two weeks they will look to reassert their credentials as leaders.
EUCRFC: D. Jones, J. Hack, G. Cook, J. Mbu, D. Smith, G. Douglass, R. Reed, C. Furlong, D. Allen, A. Ayres, W. Parrish, A. Reynolds, L. Morretta, D. Griggs, M. Sinfield, N. Trevellion, O. Stokes, D. Merrett.
