After yet another unscheduled week off and despite resting a few key-players, the Red and Whites were determined to put on a good display this week. Due to the sudden change in weather conditions the usually soft and playable 1st XV pitch at Writtle, had quickly turned into a hard slightly rutted surface – despite requests to play on the better quality 2nd pitch. Writtle wanted to stick to their 1st XV pitch.
Clear blue skies were the order of the day but there was a tricky cross-wind to complicate matters for both sides. From the off both teams demonstrated a passion to reach the eighty minute mark as victors. For a long time much of the game was played between the two 22m lines with neither team wanting to concede territory. The match ended 21-68 to Epping. There were some impressive runs and drives by an eclectic mix of forwards and back, which is extremely pleasing as this diverse range of scoring threats creates a defensive dilemma for the opponents. In the end a good Epping defensive effort and teamwork kept the opposition struggling to capitalise on potential scoring opportunities.
