Vern Has A Cream Tea

With Old Totts pulling out of the game earlier on in the week due to fixture congestion a hastily arranged match by Damo was made with Brentwood 3’s happy to travel to Thornwood as their pitches were waterlogged. Clapton have now extended their lead in the merit table to six points from Hitchin with Black Horse third but with a game in hand.

As their was no second team the Old boys had a large squad which was just as well as Vern, Shrek Jnr and Ross Stalley all pulled out on the morning of the match. Vern especially showing a total lack of commitment, deciding to continue to holiday in Devon with his family rather than driving back early to play….has been noted

Brentwood brought with them a similar make up of Old boys and Young’ns. What wasn’t evident until the game had started was that the majority of the Brentwood team were also unqualified referees as they didn’t shut up all game giving advice to Saga whenever it wasn’t required.

It was a rather lack lustre start with both teams going through the motions some what. Clapton looked the stronger but after ten minutes and against the run of play the ball was spilled by the home side and hacked up field by the Brentwood centre. Stephen “No Name” was first to the ball but unfortunately couldn’t gather it as the Brentwood Centre greatfully picked up to score.

This kicked the old men into action as they upped the pace and responding by scoring three first half tries through Richard “Diddy “ Maskell, Sam Young’n and Martin “Youthful” Smith, scoring his first try of the season, bless him. Unfortunately Gary “no nickname yet” Akers was forced from the field with a hurty tummy. Used2be replacing him in the centre

Clapton made lots of changes at half time and through the second half. Most noticeable was the return of Pablo “Sin Bin jnr” Becerra who managed to put in a scything tackle before the day was out. Nitro also got on with ten minutes left and promptly knocked the ball on

There were no more tries in the second half as the game petered out. The Brentwood fly half did manages an extremely late tackle on Clapton’s Potato that managed to get him sin binned, should have been sent off if you ask me the naughty hector.

The MOM rosette went to Diddy who upon hearing that the old boys were missing a scrum half donned the knee lengthers even though he is due to have an operation on his ickle knee today. He was also a pain in the Brentwood Ass, all match. It was great to see.

The Old boys now enter the final part of the season that will see if they can manage their start of season target of the merit table league and cup Triple double.

First game up is this Saturday when they travel to Datchworth for the Merit Table Cup quarter final. The team will be further strengthened with the return of Lobbo, Kenty and Extra A God that is known as Sprolly….Just one more question; does anyone know where the merit table league and cup trophies are?
